2 - Zbigniew Karkowski: Brain Zapping (WP)

Among the composers with whom Ensemble Phoenix Basel maintains its international presence, some play an important roll in the evolution of the electronic Noise and Improvisation scenes. In 2012, Ensemble Phoenix Basel invited the Polish composer Zbigniew Karkowski (1958-2013), who lived his last years in Tokyo and Paris. This experiment-driven and, in 2012, still lively performer, who unfortunately passed away too early, felt completely at home in collaboration with the ensemble and gesturally whipped the in “Brain Zapping” to build ever-growing walls of sound. This recording was edited and mixed by the composer himself.

Live from “LUFF does Tokyo” was a performance by Zbigniew Karkowski and percussionist Daniel Buess as part of the “Lausanne Underground Film and Music Festivals (LUFF)” which took place in Tokyo in 2012. This internationally renowned festival, based in Lausanne, curated a “Japan Edition” in Tokyo that year as part of its ongoing collaboration with musicians from the Japanese noise and experimental scene. The live performance of Buess and Karkowski was the second version of Karkowski's composition “form and disposition”, which was developed and premiered by both musicians for 2008 LUFF festival in Lausanne. The piece was recorded and released at that time as a CD together with the book “Zbigniew Karkowski – Physiques Sonores” as the first edition in the collection “Rip on/off”, a collaboration from LUFF with the “Groupe de la Riponne”.
